HIPPOTHERAPY
“Hippos”
is the Greek word for horse, so the term Hippotherapy translates
as therapy with the use of a horse. Hippotherapy, when used
as a tool by a licensed Physical, Occupational, or Speech
therapist, promotes motor planning abilities, and mobilizes
the hips, pelvis and lumbar spine. It also stimulates the
central nervous system, activates weak muscles and reduces
spasticity.
Hippotherapy
may be done with or without the use of a saddle, and with
or without the support of a back rider. Our goals are to improve
posture, mobility, balance, function and independence. As
each individual progresses in our Hippotherapy Program, we
always keep in mind the goal of moving the rider into our Therapeutic Riding Program
HorseAbility offers a year round Hippotherapy program for individuals who
would benefit from working with a Physical Therapist, Occupational
Therapist, or a Speech Language Pathologist. |
